Nigella plant is a erect annual herb of approximately 70 cm height. Leaves are 2.5 - 3.0 long cut into linear lanceglate segments; flowers bluish white; seeds trigonous, regulose, angular, small, funnel shaped 0.2 cm long and 0.1 cm wide, black in colour, odour slightly aromatic and bitter in taste. In India it is generally used as garnishing on bread, vegetable curry preparations. In Bengal it is used as Phanchphoran for many vegetable preparations. It is one of important spices used for pickle preparation through out the country.
